In some patients, treatment of the neck requires undergoing a facelift at the same time. This is true when the problems of the neck are related to the sagging of facial tissues. Also, the incisions made for a facelift often provide the best access to make modifications to the neck contour. It is important that the face and neck are in harmonious relationship to one another. You would not like the way you look if your neck appeared youthful but your face looked aged, or the other way around. - Liposuction of the submental area (the area beneath the chin) is a relatively simple procedure requiring only one or two very tiny incisions and minimal downtime. It removes the unwanted fatty deposits to give you a more attractive neck contour. The results can be dramatic.
- Dr. Bernard places any incisions for your neck contouring in the least conspicuous place. Often, a small incision under the chin, where it is barely visible with your head tipped back, is all that is necessary. The choice of technique depends on individual patient factors and what Dr. Bernard knows, from his many years of experience, will work best for you.
- If you have visible neck bands, or cords, Dr. Bernard can correct these as part of your neck contouring surgery. This is usually done by tightening the superficial neck muscles, often in combination with liposuction to smooth the neck contour. In some cases, Dr. Bernard may recommend BOTOX® injections to help soften the appearance of neck cords, though BOTOX® Cosmetic generally offers only limited results in the neck.
- A “turkey gobbler” appearance of the neck is often of concern to men as they age. As mentioned earlier, sagging skin in the neck is difficult to treat by any method other than a facelift or, in some cases, a “mini” lift, and men can be good candidates for these procedures. However, some men may qualify as candidates for a technique called “Z-plasty” or “W-plasty.” This technique involves an incision directly on the neck, made in the shape of a “Z” or “W,” that permits the removal of the excess skin that creates that “turkey gobbler” look. It is generally used only for individuals who have very “weathered,” creased skin on their neck so that the incision will blend in and be barely noticeable.
